Life radiates. The biosphere speciates to utilize every ecological niche. After a natural disaster or the formation of new volcanic land it will seek to claim that barren space. Some of its first colonizers will be moss and lichen, spores carried on the wind, creating habitat for the forms that will later inhabit them. In turn attracting a succession of life up through the trophic levels.
